Local listing management means maintaining all listings of your business online so that the same details appear everywhere: on Google, Apple, Bing, in directories and on review sites. Listing tools promise to handle this centrally in one place. Whether you need such a tool depends heavily on your business.
This guide neutrally explains how local listing tools work, what they cost and what they cannot do. You learn what happens to your listings after cancelling, which listings you need in Austria, Germany and Switzerland and when manual maintenance is perfectly enough.
- Local listing management means maintaining all business listings online consistently.
- Listing tools distribute your data via interfaces to connected platforms, prices are usually on request.
- After cancelling, with Yext for example, the protection ends and listings can drift again.
- With one location, maintaining Google, Apple, Bing and the main directories yourself is often enough.
- No tool maintains platforms without a connection, and none steers AI answers directly.
What is local listing management?
A local listing is an entry for your business on a platform with a local focus: Google, Apple Maps, Bing, a directory such as Herold or Das Örtliche, a review site or a navigation system. Local listing management means maintaining all these listings so that the same details appear everywhere.
Experts call this NAP consistency, for name, address and phone. It also covers opening hours, website and category. Listings on other sites that mention your business are called citations.
The BrightLocal figures come from the US, there is no comparable study for Austria, Germany and Switzerland. What is new is the role for AI assistants: they can take details from directories into their answers.
How a listing tool works
Listing tools such as Yext, Uberall or Partoo connect to a network of platforms via interfaces. You maintain your data once in the tool and it transfers it to all connected platforms. Yext cites more than 200 direct connections, Uberall more than 150 directories. Other providers include Semrush, BrightLocal, Moz Local or Synup. Note: not every tool covers the German-speaking region, Birdeye for example does not support Austria, Germany and Switzerland for listings according to its own help.

What matters is which platforms in your country are really connected and how often they update. One example from Yext's information: Herold in Austria and Gelbe Seiten in Germany update in real time, Das Örtliche only monthly. For local.ch and search.ch in Switzerland Yext lists review features and categories, updated monthly.
What a tool cannot do: update platforms without a connection, correct press articles and blogs or steer AI answers directly. Clean listings help AI assistants, but no tool decides what they make of them. A detailed comparison of providers is in the guide Business data tools compared.
What happens after cancelling?
You should ask this question before any contract. Yext is clearest: after cancellation Yext stops sending data but does not send old data back either. Platforms may keep using the details they received, but they do not have to. Over time they can drift again through other sources and user suggestions. So the protection against changes by others ends.
For most other providers and directory packages we found no public rule on what happens to the listings after the contract ends. So ask these questions before signing:
- Which platforms in my country are connected, and how often do they update?
- What happens to my listings after cancellation?
- Do I get access to my Google profile and other accounts, or does everything run through the provider?
- What is the minimum term, and does the contract renew automatically?
- How do I see whether a listing was really applied?
Always keep owner access to your Google profile, Apple Business and Bing Places yourself. A tool or agency should only work with access you can withdraw at any time.
What does local listing management cost?
The large providers do not publish prices: Yext, Uberall and Partoo sell on request. The price typically depends on the number of locations, the term and add-ons such as review management. Publicly available is, for example, the Herold Online Complete Plus package in Austria: from 49.20 EUR per month, billed annually in advance, with a term of one or three years. According to Herold's feature table, data is published on more than 25 platforms, including Google, Bing, Facebook, Tripadvisor and navigation systems. The Das Örtliche directory package has a twelve-month minimum term, three months notice and otherwise renews automatically for twelve months according to its product description.
For comparison: Google, Apple and Bing themselves cost nothing. For a single business, manual maintenance is mainly a question of time.
Without a tool: maintain your listings yourself
For a business with one location a clean basic set is often enough. Create or claim these listings, with exactly the same details as on your website:
- Google Business Profile, the most important listing
- Apple Business for Apple Maps and Siri
- Bing Places for Bing and Microsoft
- Facebook and Instagram if needed
- Herold, the classic business directory in Austria
- WKO Firmen A-Z, basic data comes from the trade licence, you maintain contact details yourself
- Google Business Profile, the most important listing
- Apple Business for Apple Maps and Siri
- Bing Places for Bing and Microsoft
- Facebook and Instagram if needed
- Das Örtliche, Gelbe Seiten and Das Telefonbuch
- 11880
- Google Business Profile, the most important listing
- Apple Business for Apple Maps and Siri
- Bing Places for Bing and Microsoft
- Facebook and Instagram if needed
- local.ch and search.ch, both run by localsearch
- If your business is in the commercial register, align name and address with it
Add the portals of your industry where customers actually look for you:
| Industry | Typical portals |
|---|---|
| Hotels | Booking.com, Tripadvisor, HolidayCheck, Expedia, Trivago |
| Restaurants | Tripadvisor, TheFork, Falstaff, delivery platforms |
| Practices | DocFinder in Austria, Jameda in Germany |
| Trades | MyHammer, chamber and guild directories |
| Retail | Leaflet and deals portals, marketplaces |
The guides for the three most important listings are here: Edit your Google Business Profile, Add your business to Apple Maps and Bing Places for Business. How to get rid of old and duplicate listings is covered in Delete your Google Business Profile.
NAP consistency: the rules for consistent listings
- Your website is the template. Define there once how name, address, phone and hours read, and use exactly that everywhere.
- One spelling: either Street or St., phone always in the same format, such as +43 732 000000, and the name as on your door, without additions such as location or service.
- No duplicates: search for your name, old address and old phone number in quotation marks. Every old result is a candidate for correction.
- Change everything at once: new hours first on your website, then on Google, Apple, Bing and in directories.
- Check suggestions by others: on Google and Apple users can suggest edits. Look into your profiles regularly.
- Structured data: with schema.org LocalBusiness on your website, search engines read your details unambiguously.
Tool or do it yourself? A decision guide
Whether a listing tool pays off depends mainly on two things: how many locations you have and how often your details change.
| Your situation | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 location, details rarely change | Maintain yourself | Set up the basic set cleanly once, check twice a year. A tool costs more than it brings. |
| 1 location, seasonal or frequent new hours | Maintain yourself plus checks | Enter changes in Google, Apple and Bing yourself and regularly check where old hours remain. |
| 2 to 9 locations | Weigh up | A tool pays off if details change often. Clarify first which portals in your country are really connected. |
| 10 locations or more | Tool makes sense | Manual work becomes hardly manageable. Watch the cancellation terms. |
Distributing is not checking
Whether with a tool or by hand: you write your data into the listings you know. What stays unknown are listings others created, portals without a connection and what AI assistants make of all this. That is exactly where many errors arise, see Why wrong listings appear.
faktado.ai is not a listing tool and does not distribute data. It checks: the app searches the web for mentions of your business, compares every detail with your website, asks ChatGPT and Google about your business and shows you where an old number or wrong hours remain, with the way to correct it. That complements a listing tool as well as manual maintenance. The free check shows you within about 15 minutes where you stand.

FAQ
What is a local listing?
A local listing is an entry for your business on a platform with a local focus, such as Google, Apple Maps, Bing, a directory or a review site. Local listing management means maintaining all these listings consistently.
What does NAP consistency mean?
NAP stands for name, address and phone. NAP consistency means name, address and phone number are exactly the same everywhere. In practice opening hours, website and category belong to it too.
Do I need a listing tool as a small business?
With one location usually not. Set up Google, Apple, Bing and the main directories of your country cleanly once and check them regularly. A tool pays off mainly with many locations or frequently changing details.
What happens to my listings when I cancel the tool?
With Yext, for example, no more data is sent, but no old data is sent back either. Platforms can keep the details but may change them over time through other sources. With other providers you should ask before signing.
What does local listing management cost?
The large providers only quote prices on request. Herold in Austria offers Online Complete Plus from 49.20 EUR per month with annual payment. The listings on Google, Apple and Bing themselves are free.
Does a listing tool also fix wrong AI answers?
Not directly. AI assistants read directories among other sources, so clean listings help. But they also draw on press, blogs and review sites that no listing tool maintains. What AI actually says about you has to be checked separately.
